The Ultimate Key to Success For Christian Writers, by Donald L. Hughes

In my 30 plus years as a Christian writer, editor and publisher I have met many people who wanted Christian writing success. Some came to me with ideas; others came to me with completed manuscripts. But most of them never gained the success they prayed for, and I can tell you why.
Believe it or not, I have also had Christian writers come to me saying that they did not want success. They said they didn't care about money or notoriety; they only wanted to see their work in print. These people sealed their own doom as writers with that kind of attitude.

Success as an author can be measured in different ways, so let me tell you what I think it is based on my many years of experience. I think writing success is reaching the largest number of people possible with the message I want to share and making the most amount of money doing it.

All Christian writers want to reach a large audience because they want to touch as many lives as possible. That's the first goal of Christian writing. It is important to make money because that ensures that publishers will continue to accept your material and disseminate it. It is not mercenary or unchristian to want to make money from your writing. If you don't need the money you can give it to your church or to some other organization that helps others. If you don't have the skills to earn the money in the first place, you're probably not much of a writer.
